In 2024, El Pueblo Unido of Atlantic City looks forward to continuing the American Dream. How? We need your help in building the first multicultural center in Atlantic County.

We need a space transformed into cultural cauldrons, where stories simmer into shared understanding, traditions brew into shared meals, and laughter melds into the glue that binds Atlantic County together. We refuse to let individuals paint immigrants as the “other.” This has happened quite frequently in 2023. Dehumanizing immigrants as the “other” risks sowing the seeds of fear and violence. These ideas destroy the very foundation Atlantic County was built on.

Atlantic County commissioners kill resolution calling for reversal of sanctuary state

Atlantic County commissioners refused to even discuss a resolution Tuesday that called for lawmakers to rescind New Jersey's status as a sanctuary state.No commissioner seconded the motion to consider it, so it died without being debated, and the room full of immigrant community representatives and their supporters erupted into applause.

"Stop playing games with our community; enough is enough," said Cristian Moreno-Rodriguez, executive director of El Pueblo Unido of Atlantic City.

Group demands apology for leaders' 'anti-immigrant rhetoric,' gets one

A rally Tuesday in Atlantic City demanded local leaders apologize for what the group categorized as xenophobic and anti-immigrant rhetoric at a gathering last week.Leaders in the immigrant community took issue with how some of those gathered spoke of immigrants, saying they categorized them as criminals who drain the system.

They gathered in the same spot Tuesday to call out those officials and demand apologies. At least one came. Atlantic City Councilman Kaleem Shabazz sent out a written statement during the rally Tuesday, denouncing immigrant bashing.

New Jersey immigrant rights groups call comments from South Jersey leaders ‘hurtful, racist, and xenophobic’

Moreno family committed to helping local Latino community

Being the first born children of Mexican immigrants, and a first generation Mexican immigrant, is what gave Cristian, Irvin and Victor Moreno the motivation to make life better for the local Hispanic community.

Through their individual efforts like Cristian Moreno’s role as executive director of El Pueblo Unido, which the Moreno family formed in 2019; Irvin Moreno’s run for Pleasantville City Council; and Victor Moreno’s work at Atlantic Cape Community College, the Moreno family is striving to improve the quality of life for Hispanics on multiple levels.

Spanish translation at N.J. climate meetings is not common. Advocates want to change that.

New Jersey advocates told NJ Advance Media that meetings are often not translated live in Spanish, the second most-spoken language in the state, and the availability of documents translated into Spanish only happens sometimes. This can be particularly concerning, activists said, on matters that touch on environmental issues and the health risks they may pose.

Immigrant community activists tell Atlantic County officials to reconsider resolution cooperating with ICE

Dozens of immigrant-community activists packed an Atlantic County freeholders meeting Tuesday to say they were upset that the elected officials had considered a resolution that would support “continued collaborative efforts” with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

The freeholders on Monday pulled the measure from the agenda following public outcry after it was posted Friday. But members of Latino and African community organizations attended the session to support Atlantic County’s sizable immigrant population.

Activists: Make Atlantic City 'a fair and welcoming city' for immigrants

As a tourist destination, Atlantic City has welcomed visitors to its famous Boardwalk, casinos, shopping outlets, and other attractions. Now, city leaders, activists, and clergy are launching a campaign to make it "a fair and welcoming city" for immigrants regardless of their legal status.

A coalition of leaders linked arms in solidarity at a news conference Thursday afternoon at City Hall to announce plans to introduce a measure that would bar city officials from using any city resources beyond what is required by law to help immigration agencies carry out federal enforcement.

Irvin Moreno-Rodriguez • Stockton University

Moreno-Rodriguez’s research is focused on exploring the relationship between the experiences of African American and Latino soldiers during the liberation of concentration camps in Nazi-occupied Europe and the genesis of the civil rights movement in the United States. Moreno-Rodriguez received his bachelor’s in Criminal Justice from Stockton University in 2015 and his M.A. in Holocaust and Genocide Studies from Stockton in 2022.

Moreno-Rodriguez is deeply passionate about equality, justice, and inclusivity in order to ensure that the voice of the Latino and Immigrant community is always heard at the “decision-making table.”
